George Washington was born on the 22nd February, 1732. He inherited a large tobacco plantation in Mt. Vernon,(Virginia) after his dad and brother died before he was 21.
He married a wealthy widow and he became one of the most powerful people in the whole of the 13 colonised states.
Washington represented Virginia at the continental congress, which was a meeting of representatives of the 13 states who discussed matters concerning America
He was appointed commander-in-chief and he also helped to pass the Declaration of independence on the 4th of July 1776 at the continental congress'
Under Washington's command the Americans overcame the odds and gained independence from Britain, with their final victory coming at Yorktown.
He also helped the soldiers through the difficult winter at Valley Forge in 1777, with the help of the German officer Von Stueben
After the war Washington was appointed as the first president of the United states of America. (his term lasted 8 years) He is regarded as the founding father of America and he is buried at Mt. Vernon where he died of pneumonia in 1799
