  • Symbolic Actions/Dramatic Events
  • I am Vladimir Lenin of the Bolshevik party. The new system here will be communism. I promise you peace, land, and bread!
  • The government used all of its funds to fund its soldiers in WWI and also spent extravagantly, with the construction of the massive Winter Palace to serve a home for the tsar. Russia took on 11 billion rubles of debt. The Russian Ruble inflated immensely. When World War One started in August 1914, Russia responded by patriotically rallying around Nicholas II. Military disasters greatly weakened the Russian Army in the initial phases of the war.
  • Role of Force
  • Because workers felt neglected, they went on strikes. The February Revolution (March 8-16, 1917) caused many Russians to lose faith in the Czarist regime. Petrograd bread riots occurred among peasants due to famine and food shortages.
  • Dual Sovereignty
  • Russia entered World War I, drastically harming its economy. By the end of 1917, the Bolsheviks, led by Lenin, in major Russian cities and introduced communism there.
  • Moderates Attain Power
  • The provisional government took over forcefully, only making the events worse.
  • Marxism-Leninism is a political philosophy that seeks to establish a socialist state and develop it further into socialism and later communism. Marx - Karl Marx - is the author of the Communist Manifesto. It affected women in that it made enormous contributions towards women’s liberation. “If women’s liberation is unthinkable without communism, then communism is unthinkable without women’s liberation.” - Inessa Armand. The classical Marxists developed a theoretical framework tying the fight for women’s liberation to the struggle for socialism (and later communism). It affected religion in that it removed many people’s religious beliefs in favor of atheism. Marxist-Leninist scientific atheism proposes that humanity’s place in nature is dialectical and materialistic; religion is the “opium of the people,” meant to promote a person’s passive acceptance of his or her poverty and lack of success.
  • Lenin attained power and transformed the Bolshevik Party into the Communist Party.
  • Now that I have attained power, I am renaming the Bolshevik Party the Communist Party.
