Frightened by the tears in her eyes, I promised to never do it again- a promise that would prove impossible to keep.
Key event one
"Princesses don't play with fire!"(3)
How it propels the action
"By age ten I could make a fire burn brighter and make sparks dance across the floor" (4)
"I waited to feel something, for some spark to light in my chest at the sight of his broad shoulders and strong jawline. Even after the years of inevitability surrounding my marriage, part of me hoped we might fall in love. But nothing happened and my confidence wavered"(6)
Princess Denaliea learns she has the power to play with, resist, and control fire. Her mother and sister find this affinity terrifying. Denaliea's mother tells her that princesses don't play with fire and scares Denaliea enough to make her hide her powers.
"The melody of her voice soothed me, and the muscles in my stomach unwound." (7)
As Denaliea grows up she finds it harder to control her powers. She practices in her room to keep them in check. She worries about what other people will think if she is caught. If she is caught she could be killed.
Denaleia cannot keep her powers under control and accidentally sets fire to her dress after she is attacked by the princess's horse.
"She bowed her head in my direction and looked up through her lashes, her eyes catching mine...my pulse hammered in my ears until she twirled away... If she'd been anything other than a problem to me I might have found her rather alluring."(24)
Denaliea meets her soon to be husband but cannot find him attractive. Instead she ends up being interested in his sister after she helps her after her attack with a horse.
Denaleia finds the princess of Havemont comforting after she helped her after getting attacked by a horse. She later learns she is a princess after her brother yells at her. They develope a hate-love relationship because Mare is stubborn and Denaleia is trying to be nice but failing to catch Mare's attention.
As Denaleia attempts to catch Mare's attention Mare finds her attractive while she is drunk. This causes Mare to be skeptical of her for most of the story and tries not to bring her thoughts up to anyone
