Storyboard Text

  • My parents left me to fend for myself when I was fourteen.
  • I moved to Seattle to study at the University of Washington
  • I joined the rowing team and won the National Championship every year I was on the team. I was good, but very inconsistent.
  • California was our biggest rival, they were coached by Ky Ebright, and while I was on the freshman and junior varsity teams, his crew always won the varsity National championship.
  • Even though California won most of the important races, we won the varsity National Championship in 1936, and then won the Olympic trials to go to Berlin, and that's where I am now.
  • In Berlin, we won gold, by barely beating Britain and Germany, who were among the most refined crews in the world at the time.
