  • Annmarie and the Johansons
  • pg.1: silvery blond hair pg.8: secretive, family get illegal newspaper and hides it. pg.11: Annmarie is helpful with her little sister. Tells Kirsty bedtime stories. pg.13: has another sister. Where is she? pg.14: Lise died in an accident and was about to marry Peter. pg.24 Mrs. Johanson says that friends will take care of the Jews who lost their jobs and shops because of the Germans. pg.35: Johanson's are hiding Ellen. pg. 41: Lise was hit by a car and died. Annmarie didn't know exactly what happened. pg. 74: Very sceptical when it comes to people planning things and keeping secrets. Got Uncle Henrik to tell her that they were lying about Great Aunt Birte.
  • Ellen and the Rosens
  • pg.7: Family friends with the Johansons. pg.7: I think the Rosens get the illegal newspaper, too. pg.22: Being looked out for by the Johansons fro some reason. pg.25: Jewish pg.25: Mr. Rosen is a teacher. They can't close the whole school but can they fire him? pg.36: they are having to split up because of the Germans. Ellen is staying with the Johanson's and Peter is taking Mr. and Mrs. Rosen to safety but they don't know where.

  • pg.8: Peter brings the secret newspaper to the Johansons pg.14: was about to marry Lise, Annmarie's sister although she died for some reason. pg.17: redheaded pg.17: Used to be really fun when Lise was there, but now he is in a hurry and not as silly. pg.36: Peter is bringing Ellen's parents to safety.

  • Solders surrounded the streets of European countries for Germany. Germany was trying to take over all of the countries and hurt, torment, and eliminate Jews. A man named Adolf Hitler was all behind this. Soldiers would go inside of homes and search them for Jews. Jews would try to escape to other contries that are free so they didn't have to hide in an occupied country.

  • pg. 2: have to be ready when a German soldier is there so they can follow the rules.
  • Ellen Being separated from her parents and having to hide and pretend she is not herself. Mr. and Mrs. J planning at the right time to do certain stuff to help Ellen. If they acted at the wrong time they can end up hurting her or their family.

  • pg. 51: Lives in a house by the sea. pg. 75: Is a part of helping the Jews. Doesn't know everything to help so he is more brave but knows enough to help. Trusts Annemarie and tells her that Great Aunt Birte is real. pg. 82: Hosts a funeral for Great Aunt Birte.
