  • Exposition
  • Rising Action
  • We will now be starting the lottery!
  • Climax
  • We won.
  • That's not fair. We need to pick again!
  • The children were standing around the pile of stones on a summer day.
  • Falling Action
  • I won it. Please do not do this.
  • The lottery is about to begin and the men of the families will be picking for the family.
  • Resolution
  • Bill Hutchinson had picked the paper with a black dot on it meaning he "won", but Mrs. Hutchinson is upset and is saying that he did not have time to pick a piece of paper without the black dot.
  • Literary Term - Irony
  • Now the Hutchinson family must pick from the box and little Davy will need help picking since he is so young. Mrs. Hutchinson than picks the paper with the black dot on it.
  • Since Mrs. Hutchinson picked the paper with the black dot she is now "buried alive" by people throwing stones at her. Which is why she was so upset when Bill had picked the paper with the black dot in the beginning.
  • Irony - when something unexpected happens. Little Davy throws a rock at his mom helping everyone "kill" her.
