Hello Class! Today is a special day! Ms. Clark will be co-teaching with me to help us withour understanding. We will work together to make sure you understand today's lesson.
Just as students work together, communication is key for co-teaching
Co-teaching= 2 or more teachers working together for a lesson
One-Teaching, One Observing
Station, Parallel and Alternative Teaching
Co-Teaching Models & Approaches
One Teaching, One Assisting
Collaboration and Co-teaching Success
One Teaching, One Observing. While the head teacher addresses the class, Ms. Clark stands quietly, observing the children and their reactions to hearing about the co-teaching. This teaching is effective for child development study and behavioral understanding.
What style will be effective for the students?
One Teaching, One Assisting: This strategy is effective for large classrooms. The Teacher Assistant/ Aide helps the teacher execute the plan by passing out papers, collecting assignments or even teaching the lesson if they have a new approach on teaching for the students to know.
How can I work with this teacher and help my specific students?
"The key ingredients to a successful partnership are open communication, accepting both positive and negative feedback, learn from or get inspired by someone who may have less teaching experience, mutual respect and trust, compatibility of personal characteristics, and frequent check-ins" (Oh, Murawski, & Nussli, 2017).
Let's plan ahead, work together and be the best teachers we can be!
"Co-teaching impacts students with emotional and behavioral disorder" (Jackson, Willis, Giles, Lastrapes, & Mooney,2017). Station teaching is effective so that specific and direct instruction per activity. One teacher can control the classroom while the other teacher specifically instructs a learning station. Different from alternative teaching where both teachers instruct simultaneously on different topics. Parallel teaching is where the teachers teach simultaneously, but directly associated with specific students, instead of different topics. One teacher can deal with all the ELA while the other deals with the honor students .
Team teaching is both effective and present equality with the teachers. This requires both parties knowing what is being taught, a compromise/ collaboration on how it needs to be taught and the steps needed for all the students to be incorporated. Team teaching “share the instruction of all students, whether in a large group, in monitoring students working independently, or in facilitating groups of students working on shared projects” (Cook & Friend, 2017).
Though teaching styles are different, teachers should try and compliment each other for effective communication and instructional strategy (Cook & Friend, 2017). Students learn best when their teacher knows what they are talking about and are organized. So, in co-teaching, collaboration and organization are best for effective teaching strategies.
