Storyboard Text

  • I support this war because the English have interfered with trade on seas, and inciting Indian attacks on the frontier. But what is the most central cause, is that the English have seized and enslaved naval seamen and blood has been shed on American ground.
  • (Impressment)
  • Between 1812-14, the war against the British was fought mostly by the naval soldiers. The commander was Oliver Hazard Perry for the U.S. in Lake Eerie where they demolished the British fleet.
  • The British marched into Washington D.C. and set fire to the White House. Dolley Madison saved the portrait of George Washington.
  • Francis Scott Key watched when Baltimore was bombed and Americans stopped a British invasion. While watching the two sides clash, he wrote the "Star Spangled Banner", America's national anthem.
  • British soon attacked New Orleans to block U.S. use of the Mississippi, so Madison sent Andrew Jackson to command the Americans. The Americans won the battle.
  • Treaty of Ghent ended the war. Some of the effects of the effects of the war were increased Patriotism, weakened Native American resistance to westward expansion, and American manufacturing grew.
