The symbolism shown here are the rocks that the kids collect. The rocks symbolize death and relief. For the "lottery winner" is shows death but to the rest of the town the rocks symbolize relief.
Tone and Theme
Imagery is shown at the end of the story, when Tessie is stoned. "Tessie Hutchinson was in the center of the cleared space , she held her hands out desperately..." The story also implied that a rock hit Tessie on the head. This causes imagery becuase i can imagine someone getting hit.
Repition is the figure of speech that is used. Tessie kept saying "this isn't fair" over and over. when she was being stoned to death.
The tone of this story is gloomy, suspenseful and dark. The theme of the story is that no a tradition is a tradition no matter how bad it is.
