  • This is an exmple of sympolism because the paper slips indicate lost tradition. This is because the story reveals that they used to use wooden chips but the old ritual was "long forgot".
  • Tone and Theme - (Tone) Playful
  • The story describe the setting in the beginning of the story by using words such as "richly green grass". This helps us picture the image in our mind.
  • Symbol - Black Dot
  • This story takes place back in time and shows us this by using figures of speech such as "I clean forgot". This is a slang term that does not mean your memories were washed away but just that somthing slipped your mind.
  • Juxtaposition
  •  The beginning of the story describes the children of the town as playful and free. This sets the tone of a happy town full of loving parents and helpful teachers.
  • In this story the black dot represents unescapable death. This is represented by the peoples reaction to the black dot. Their reaction is one of fear and terror.
  • The beginning of the story uses juxtaposition to convey the sence of horror and cruelty that is the lottery. The beginning of the story shows kids playing with stones and by the end of the story those stones are used  for murder.
