  • The kids, before the gathering for the lottery, would often play in the town square. It gave the story warmth and innocence.

  • Everyone in the town was anxiously waiting for the slips to be drawn, everyone was praying that them or their family didn't get choosen. Being a lottery, it was all up to chnace which made the scene tense.

  • After Tessie "won" the lottery, she got her prize, a stoning from her friends and family!
  • Metaphor
  • Draw your ballot
  • The black box is a symbol to the villagers of the longevity of their tradition and the fact that many people before them have upheld the practice of the lottery
  • "...the flowers were blossoming profusely and the grass was richly green."
  • The black box is a metaphor for Death and Tradition
