  • Symbol
  • Imagery
  • Figurative Language
  • The symbol I chose was the black box. The box is a symbol of the whole community and the tradition that takes place with the box. Although, the box also symbolizes death because the papers held in the box will show who will die. It represents fear and history. It is like an artifact,no one wants to change the box and the meaning behind it. A quote that shows the importance of the box is line 54 it states, "the original pharaphernalia for the lottery had been lost long ago..." This shows that the box is a necessary item needed for a certain activity.
  • Tone/Theme
  • An example of imagery is in the very beginning of the story. On line 1 the author shares that, "...was clear and sunny, with fresh warmth of a full-summer day;the flowers were blossoming..." This shows juxtapostion, the story starts off describing how it was a beautiful day but it then turned disasterous later on. It is trying to trick you and make you think that the story will have a happy ending and someone will win the lottery.
  • An example of a figure of speech would be personification in line 261. It states that, "...he dropped all the papers but those on the ground, where the breeze caught them and lifted them off." This also shows a problem taking place and a cause and effect situation.  But the wind didn't actually pick up the papers, it is explaining that due to the wind, the papers didn't completely fall to the ground.
  • A theme can include tradition or a ritual along with society. This whole story is about an event that takes place yearly. Society was divided during the meeting, since a lottery was drawn by family. On line 311 it says, "Although the villagers had forgotten the ritual and lost the original black box, they still remembered to use stones." This is an important aspect that goes along with the theme of ritual. It shows how the tradition still lives on
