  • The story protrays a feeling of warmth and excitment in its first few paragraphs, it does this by discribing the children playing and the calming nature of the village and the summer day.

  • the author shows us that there is something that we do not know by showing the the population of the town back away from the box.

  • The story gives us a sense of horror and fear in the few last paragraphs when Mrs. Hutchinson "wins" the lottery and is then stoned to death.

  • the story uses imagery in the very first sentence."The moring of june 27th was clear and sunny , with freash warmthof a full summer day; the flowers were blossuming profusley and grass was richly green."
  • the story uses metaphore when it says" Mrs. Hutchinson craned her neck to see her husband and children standing near the front.
  • A symbol of the story is the black dot on the paper, it represents more than just an dot  it is a prelude to a persons death and people see it as such.
