A small town has gathered for the annual lottery. The head of every house is called up to pick a piece of paper from the black box. Mr. Summers, an old man is in charge of the lottery. The tension is the crowd beginning to build up for the drawing.
Tessie starts to complain because she doesn't think her husband Bill had enough time to pick a card. This gives the element of surprise because out of everyone, Tessie's husband is the one to get the black dot. This helps evolve the story and continue the plot.
The family gathers for another small lottery, since Tessie argued that Bill wasn't given enough time. The draw this time has the entire family participating. Everyone is wondering whose gonna pick the card with the black dot. That's how the mystery is created.
The town begins to pick up and throw the stones collected by the boys earlier. They do this because Tessie was the unlucky one who drew the card with a black dot. More and more people begin to chuck rocks at her.
