Ann was born on a large cotton plantation in the south. Both of her parents were slaves and were also born into slavery. Her family only received enough resources to live off of from their masters.
The cotton plantation that Ann worked on used a gang system. This meant that slaves on the plantation were split into groups with one "Head Driver" and they worked until the overseer on the plantation said the day was over
Ann was chosen to work in the house as a housemaid. She lived in the "big house" (her master's house), and ate the leftovers from the family.
Ann didn't like her new position because she was separated from the slaves, she had no privacy, and she was punished more often than often than other slaves.
Ann married another slave that lived on a nearby plantation and has a baby when she was 14 years old. Ann also had 5 other children throughout her life but all of them died before they reached adulthood.
