The story stars a group of hood teens named The Greasers. They have a rival group named The Socs. The Greasers are the lower class and always get in trouble. The Socs are upper class, always jumping the Greasers. The main character is Ponyboy Curtis, he is an outsider amungst the Greasers.
When Ponyboy and Johnny walk home from the drive in movie, Bob and a few other Socs jump them. In an act of self defense Johnny kills Bob because he was drowning Ponyboy.
The boys run away from their murder, they hide in an abandoned church. The church burns down leaving Johnny with terrible injuries. He was in the hospital for days until he passed. Everyone was devastated, Dally the most upset.
Dally gets depressed after Johnny dies. He robs a grocery store and the police are after him. He is cornered with the Greasers chasing to help him. He pulls out an unloaded gun because he knows the the police will shoot him, thats what Dally wanted.
He's just a kid!
Ponyboy takes everyones deaths hard. He begins to fail all his classes and he is very sick. He asks his teacher how he can make all this up. He has to write a theme about something he cares about. he writes this book.
When I stepped out into the bright sunlight from the darkness of the movie house, I had only two things on my mind: Paul Newmann and A Ride Home
My favorite part in the book is when Dally Dies. Yes it is sad but I think it was a great way to show how damaged he was. he had a rough life but he was really sweet and a good kid on the inside. When Johnny died it broke that tough guy shell and showed how he really was.
