"I bet we started it, we must have dropped a lighted cigarette or something."
Ponyboy Curtis is one day walking home from the movie theater, when a red Corvair begins to follow him. It was full of Socs, rich teenage boys, who pulled by Ponyboy, got out of the car, and jumped him. Before too long, Ponyboy`s gang of friends consisting of Dally, Two-Bit, Darry, Sodapop, Steve, and Johnny, came to the rescue.
Johnny Cade and Ponyboy Curtis were at the park one early morning, when the same red Corvair pulled up with the same Socs. They started to jump them, one drowning Ponyboy, when Johnny stabbed and killed Bob, their gang leader.
"I had two things on my mind: Paul Newman and a ride home."
On the way home from Dairy Queen, Johnny, Dally, and Ponyboy were stopped by a fire in the church they had stayed at. Kids on a field trip got hold of a cigarette and caused the fire. Johnny and Ponyboy ran to the rescue saving all the kids, but only Ponyboy made it out in good condition. Johnny on the other hand had severe burns and a broken back.
"I been carryin` a heater. It ain`t loaded, but it sure does help a bluff."
The fire at the church, causing Johnny`s broken back later killed him. He was in the hospital for a few days, but could not withstand the pain. Ponyboy was devastated, but Johnny and him became heroes.
"Stay gold, Ponyboy."
At the end of the story, Ponyboy writes how he began his class project that was supposed to be a minimum of five pages. He was struggling in the class, because he had missed so many days of school. Ponyboy was required to do the project, and ended up writing The Outsiders.
After Johnny died, Dallas Winston ran away. He went and robbed a grocery store. While he was running from the police he pulled out his fake pistol. The police saw the gun, thinking it was real and loaded, and shot Dally.
