  • May 7, 1915: Sinking of the Lusitana, German U-boat killed 1,000+ people, 128 were American
  • February 1, 1917: Beginning of unrestricted submarine warfare, ships attacked without warning
  • May 4, 1916: Germany makes the Sussex Pledge to suspend surprise attacks on merchant ships fearing US entrance to war
  • March 1, 1917: Zimmerman note from Germany to Mexico was intercepted; Germany urged Mexico to join war in promise for the return of AZ, NM, and Tx
  • April 6, 1917: Due to reasons above, US officially declared war on Germany
