I chose stones for the sumbol, they symbolize hatred and murder. They're used to kill who is chosen in the lottery. In line 315, It states, "Mrs.Delacroix selected a stone so large she had to pick it up with both hands..."
Tone and Theme
The imagry quote I chose was on line 2 and it states, "The flowers were blossoming profusely and the grass was richly green..." When the reader reads this, they can picture how the day looked. This gives you a better idea of the setting and tone. You can imagine a beautiful sunny day from this line in the story.
This quote on line 183 states, "Small papers in the men's large hands..." This is an example of juxtaposition. The small papers and large hands are opposites yet put in a sentence next to eachother.
The tone of the story is suspensful, the reader is uncertain what will happen. The theme is a society loosing a sense of humanity due to a difficult survival situation. The town was overpopulated so they had to kill a citizen each year to stay stable. On line 328, it states, "It isn't right," Mrs. Hutchinson screamed, and then they were upon her." Other people in the town were about to stone her to death.
