  • Dixie Dellacroix is making a wall of rocks keeping the boys away from her. This is a scene where the kids are playing before the adults come in and start the Lottery.
  • Symbol
  • This is the scene when they opened their tickets and they felt surprised, afraid, relief and pity. Tessie is crying because her ticket was the one that was picked and will die soon.
  • Imagery
  • Tessie Hutchinson was picked for the Lottery meaning she's going to get stoned. They tookk kids rocks, picked up some other rocks and threw them at her till she died a painful death.
  • Metaphor
  • The box is a symbol of culture and death. It represents the cycle of life and it also represents how savage humans can really be.
  • The beginning sentences create an image of a beautiful sunny day. "... the flowers were blossoming profusely and the grass was richly green."
  • The box is a metaphor for death. It means death and whoever gets the ticket with the black dot will die by stone.
