Tim gets drafted to join the Vietnam war. both him and his mom know that is not what Tim wants to do, because back in college he had taken a stand against the war.
Tim decides to start driving north. after a long drive, Tim starts to look for a place to rest along the way.
He pulled into an old fishing resort called "Tip Top Lodge" it wasn't much of a lodge though. it was more like eight or nine yellow cabins and a larger building on top of a hill. the man on the porch of the house on the hill was Elroy Berdahl: 81 years old, skinny and mostly bald.
Tim is on a boat in the rainy river with Elroy, and Canada is just 20 yards north. a short swim, and he would be free. Tim starts thinking about what he is leaving behind, and how he would explain this to his family - especially his dad. He cant do it. He starts to cry,
After thinking about those things on the boat, he decides to head south, back to the house. he cant leave his family just because he has to do something he dosen't stand for.
Tim becomes a soldier and goes to Vietnam. He comes back, but he isn't still happy with himself. He thinks he is a coward.
