Storyboard Text

  • Tecumseh and the Native Americans in the Northwest Territory ally with the British. Tecumseh wants to create a nation for Native Americans. Americans in the West are scared of being attacked by natives.
  • U.S. ships are highjacked by the British Navy, and American sailors are kidnapped and forced to work aboard their ships. This is called impressment.
  • Although the country is divided over the issue, President James Madison, a Democratic-Republican, urges Congress to declare war on Britain.
  • Phase One of the war was fought in the Great Lakes region. Oliver Hazard Perry won the Battle of Lake Erie. William Henry Harrison won the Battle of the Thames, and would later become President.
  • Phase Two of the war was when the British blockaded the East Coast of the U.S., and they went into Washington D.C. and burned down the White House. This phase is also where Francis Scott Key wrote "The Star Spangled Banner"
  • The Third and final phase of the war was in Louisiana. Andrew Jackson led the Americans to a victory at the battle of New Orleans, but the war was technically over because both countries had already signed the Treaty of Ghent before the battle. Andrew Jackson was considered a war hero, and later became President. The British Blockade made Manufacture goods for themselves, which leads to the Industrial Revolution.
