  • James Madison was president in 1809, he later sends a request to congress wanting the United States to go to war with Britain.

  • I am the fourth president & do not like the British! I will think of ways to go to war.
  • Native American Resistance & Impressment
  • Native American resistance & Impressment were caused of the War of 1812. In the northwest territory Tecumseh, a Native American chief, set up Natives to fight with Americans. He allied with the british in Canada. Also, England our ships & sailors while trading. These things gave James Madison a reason to declare war.
  • England is impressing our sailors when we try to trade & I do not like it!
  • Phase one was mostly fought by the navy in the Great Lakes & in Canada. Oliver Hazard Perry took control of the U.S. Navy in Lake Eerie. When perry's ship was sunk he rowed to another boat and took down the British fleet. Then, British ground forces retreated into Canada & General William Henry Harrison followed & defeated them at the Battle of Thames.

  • I am Oliver Hazard Perry & I destroyed the British ships on Lake Eerie!
  • After British defeated Napoleon, they put there energy in defeating the U.S. The British blockaded the coast, then burned down the White House.As Francis Key Scott watched the bombardment of Ft. McHenry in Baltimore, Maryland, he wrote "The Star Spangled Banner", which is our National Anthem.
  • Phase Two- Francis Key Scott & Bombardment of Fort McHenry
  • I'm Francis Key Scott & I wrote "the Star Spangled Banner".
  • The British attacked New Orleans to cut off American use of the Mississippi River. I response to that, Madison sent Andrew Jackson to command the American forces. Jackson lead the American forces to victory!
  • Phase Three- Andrew Jackson as a War Hero & the Battle of New Orleans
  • Andrew Jackson, go command and fight the war!
  • The War of 1812 increased the American Patriotism, weakened the Native American resistance to westward settlement & the U.S. manufacturing grew which lead to the beginning of industrial revolution.
  • Effect of the War
  • Because of the War of 1812, Americans realized we needed more independence in economy.
