Seeking company, Holden decides to call up an old girlfriend named Sally Hayes. They go see a play and then go ice skating. When they take a break, Holden decides he is fed up with society and wants to run away. When he tells Sally of his spontaneous plan she is confused and refuses. They get into a quarrel and part company.

After his date with Sally goes awry, Holden decides to meet an old friend named Carl Luce at The Wicker Bar in the Seton hotel. They discuss life and when Carl leaves, Holden gets drunk and talks to some girls. He eventually leaves and goes to central Park to see the duck pond. While there Holden decides he will sneak into his apartment and see his sister, Phoebe.
Daddy'll kill you! Do you even care about anything?
Holden sneaks into his family apartment while his parents are out at a party. His sister is excited to see him at first but after learning he will be kicked out of yet another school she is upset. When asked if he cares about anything, Holden decides his ideal place in the world would be a catcher in the rye.

After visiting Phoebe, Holden decides to visit and stay the night with his old english professor, Mr. Antolini. He tells Holden that the destructive path he is on is leading up to a devastating fall from grace. After falling asleep, holden awakes to find Mr. Antolini patting his head. This disturbs Holden and he abruptly leaves.

The next day, Holden decides he will go to Phoebe's school and give her a note to meet him during her lunch. He makes a plan to travel West and become an anchorite living in a cabin and working odd jobs. He asks Phoebe to meet him at the Metropolitan Museum of Art to say goodbye.
When Holden meets with Phoebe they take a walk through Central Park. She tells him that she will go West with him and when he refuses to let her she becomes upset. After arguing, Holden decides he will not be leaving and buys Phoebe a ticket to ride the carousel. The sight of his sister riding in the rain finally brings him happiness.
