"You think you're too good for us...just because you finished high school and have a job in town!"
"You wanna join our gang?"
"Que hablas Espanol?"
Uncle Luis and Papa argue over Papa's decision to leave Las Rafas and move into town. Luis thinks it's because Papa thinks he's better than the rest of the family, but Papa claims it's because he'll be closer to work. Then Junior figures out that the real reason they are leaving is because of him. Papa wants Junior to learn English and get a better education.
On Junior's first day of school, he gets into an altercation with a few other boys but then ends up joining their gang called "Los Indios". They wander around enemy territory and sneak into a movie theatre called "The Rat House".
"What's he doing here?"
The gang finds a white boy from public school. They chase him down and ask him if he speaks English. When they discover that he doesn't they beat him up, but end up letting him go. When Junior gets home, he does chores in order to earn money so he can go to the movies.
"Maten los gringos!"
When Junior goes outside to finish his chores, he spots the white boy that he and his gang beat up peaking at him over the fence. He is their neighbor. As Mama talks to the other boy, Denver's mother, Mama invites Denver to go to the movies with Junior. Junior obviously doesn't want to bring Denver, but if he doesn't he won't be allowed to go to the movies at all.
Denver and Junior walk to the movie theatre in silence. Denver is nervous and Junior thinks about what he will say to Los Indios about Denver. Chango is not happy to see Denver and immediately questions what he is doing with Junior.
Junior makes us a lie that Denver is actually a blonde Indian from Oklahoma. Chango is skeptical but allows Denver to tag along anyways. Junior tells Denver to chant "Maten los gringos", which means "kill the gringos. Denver is accepted into Los Indios after he does this.
