Storyboard Text

  • Exposition
  • "Just before I started the first grade, we moved from Los Rafas into town. It created a family uproar that left hard feelings for a long time."
  • Inciting Incident
  • "To show that I was a good sport, I reached down. Instead of a shake or a tug up, he pulled me down so I sprawled alongside him."
  • Rising Action
  • "Most important there were the movies. I forget the name of theatre. I think it was the Rio. But no matter. We called it the Rat House."
  • Junior and his family moved to this new location. There were several disagreement about the move here between his family members. However, this location would play a big role through the rest of the story.
  • Climax
  • Junior gets disrespected by Chango and what is basically his gang. They are fourth graders and Junior is a first grader. Junior is able to stand up for himself and the group eventually makes him one of them.
  • Falling Action
  • Upon being let into the group, Junior and the gang go to the movies often. It is their hangout location on the weekend. One person would pay and the rest would sneak in and watch their favorite western movies. This was their way of bonding as a gang.
  • Resolution
  • "He's not what you think. Just because he doesn't understand Spanish doesn't mean he can't be one of us."
  • The gang encounters a white boy with blonde hair who doesn't look or act anything like the rest of the group and they don't like that. So, they beat him up and put fear into him.
  • "We ambushed him the next day. Four of us came around the way he'd expect us to, while the other two of us sneaked the back way to intercept him between home and the elementary school."
  • The white boy lives next to Junior and is later identified as Denver. Both parents set up a playdate for them. Junior has to include Denver with the group when they go to another movie and Junior really doesn't want to go with him.
  • "Then his eyes watered up, and his lips twitched in readiness for the blubbering that, in disgust, I anticipated."
  • Once they reach the theatre, the gang is really confused. They find it odd how they are including the same boy they all jumped and made fun of. However, Junior stands up for him and Denver is accepted into their group. They all obtain equal respect for each other.
