Johnny and Ponyboy ran away and began living in a church. One day, as Dally was bringing them back from breakfast, they came back to the church on fire. There were little kids stuck in the back of the church, and Johnny and Ponyboy jumped through a window to save them. Dally helped Johnny and Ponyboy out of the church, and all three of them were rushed to the hospital.
Johnny was getting worse and worse ever since the fire. He was suffering from burns and he was paralyzed waist down. Ponyboy and Dally went to visit him for the last time. Johnny was barely alive when they got there. He talked to Ponyboy then, he died.
