Johnny is a Greaser, a hoodlum. He is apart of a gang that's known for causing trouble and being bad. The Socs are a higher class gang who love to jump the Greasers. The Socs are made out to be perfect, rich teens while the Greasers are bad, dumb teenagers. The two gangs hate eachother.
Johnny, a abused Greaser, saved his best friend Ponyboy by stabbing the Soc that was trying to drown Ponyboy. The other Socs ran off after that.
After Johnny kills Bob the Soc, They go to Dallas for help. He makes them go to a church far away from home and they do, But then the church there sets on fire after Dally comes to make sure they are alright and a few kids are trapped inside the church, Johnny and Pony boy go inside and help rescue them and a beam falls on Johnny's back, paralyzing him.
Johnny dies in the hospital due to his severe injuries. Ponyboy is heartbroken and Dally is angered by it. He feels like it's his fault that Johnny died because he couldve stopped Johnny and Ponyboy from from running into the church. Dallas, out of anger, robs a convenience store and gets shot and killed by police after he pulls an unloaded gun on them.
Johnny slowly gets better as time goes on. And even though Sodapop, Ponyboys older brother, is heartbroken after a love letter he sent to his girlfriend Sandy was returned unopened, he also learns to be happier and knows that she's happier too. Johnny is given an 5 page essay to write about something from his teacher, and that essay resulted in the book.
My favorite part of the book was when Dallas came to see how Ponyboy and Johnny were doing. I like how they all were eating like horses and generally just having a great time together.
