Juan Ponce De Leon discovers the coast of Florida. While sailing along the coasts of Florida, Ponce De Leon realized there was a strong current going northward. This was later known as the Gulf Stream.
Jean Ribault came to North America to set up colonies. He set up the settlements Charlesfort and Port Royal. They were set up in current day South Carolina. These settlements will be abandoned in 1564.
Fort Caroline was established in northeast Florida by Rene De Laudonniere for France.
Pedro Menendez de Aviles settled in St. Augustine with his men and attacked Fort Caroline. Menendez was successful and pursued Ribault after the siege of Fort Caroline. Ribault later lost his men and ships to a hurricane.
Coquina was found and used by Governor Pedro Menendez de Marquez and the Spanish. It was fireproof and readily available. It's formed on the east coast of Florida.
Sir Francis Drake attacked St. Augustine. His forces destroyed San Juan de Pinillo. This was the sixth wooden fort.
