  • Evidence #1     Chapter 6
  • Evidence #2   Chapter 7
  •  Evidence #3   Chapter 38
  • A police officer stops Stanley and asks why he was running. He notices the stolen sneakers and Stanley was arrested soon later. This an example of Stanley not thinking positively, who he did not steal the sneakers, but just wanted to give the sneakers to his father.  A quote from the book is: "A patrol car pulled alongside him. A policeman asked him why he was running. Then he took the shoes and made a call on his radio. Shortly thereafter, Stanley was arrested."
  • Evidence #4     Chapter 44
  •  This piece of evidence shows Stanley digging his first hole at Camp Green Lake at sunrise.  This evidence supports the theme because when Stanley was digging the hole, he was thinking  both positively and with strategy, and with a little determination to get his hole dug. But only with his positive thinking and determination did he complete his goal. A quotation from this part of the story is: "He heard the water truck approaching, and felt a strange sense of pride at being able to show Mr. Sir, or Mr. Pendanski, that he had dug his first hole."
  • Evidence #4 (continuing)
  • This piece of evidence supports the theme because it is showing Stanley and Zero determined to climb the mountain and reach Big Thumb. Stanley is thinking positively and has his mind set on reaching his goal, and only with those kind of thoughts did he find the strength to reach the top of the mountain. A quote from the text is: (Stanley)"His strength came from somewhere deep inside himself and also seemed to come from the outside as well. After focusing on Big Thumb for so long, it was as if the rock had absorbed his energy and now acted like a kind of giant magnet pulling him toward it."
  • Evidence #4 (continuing)
  • This scene supports the theme because it shows Stanley working hard trying to dig out the suitcase that he and Zero think contains Stanley's family's fortune. Only with determination did Stanley and Zero free the suit case from the packed dirt. A phrase from the text of this scene is: '"He dug with his hands until he found the leather handle, and then he pulled the suitcase up and out of the dirt. “I got it!” he exclaimed. It was heavy. He handed it up to Zero.“You did it,” Zero said, taking it from him.“We did it,” said Stanley."'
