  • The government and the church were intertwined. The king had the final say in all church matters. This was also loosely organized and the Natives had to become Europeanized.

  • Jesuits no longer wanted the Church and state to intertwine. In 1759 Pombal drives out 600 Jesuits. Then, they fortified royal authority. Pombal (who was basically a governor) was paranoid of the crown.
