  • Who did project on the  Ottoman Empire?
  • Me! I did!
  • Ok show us your project.
  • The Ottoman Empire was located between western Europe and eastern Asia. During this time, travelers went by land and used the travel routes for trade. So, travelers were forced to pay taxes to pass through the Ottoman Empire which, at this time, was the only way to get to and from these two regions!
  • Long, Long ago there was a tribe of Turks. The Turks were a tribe from Middle East that conquered much of the Eastern Asia/Europe and ruled for 600 years. As they expanded their territory they became known as the Ottoman Empire. This Empire included many different religious and ethnic groups and was a HUGE empire! However, most tribes did NOT like being controlled by the Ottomans.
  • The Europeans discovered new sea routes and no longer needed the land routes controlled by the Ottomans. This meant that the Ottomans were no longer getting the tax money that these land routes provided. As a result, the Ottoman Empire could no longer afford to maintain their military, keep control of conquered territory, and manage their empire.
  • Eventually the Ottoman Empire became so large that other countries were getting worried and feared their power. The Europeans decided it was time to stop the Ottoman Empire from spreading and taking over any more territory. This fight between the Ottoman Empire and Europe is what became known as World War I.
  • The Ottoman Empire was on the losing side of the war and the winners forced the empire to break apart and many new countries were formed. After the Ottoman Empire broke apart, the nations of Syria, Lebanon, Israel, and Jordan were created. Also much of the Empire’s land went to Europe making the European counties bigger and better, and all the land that was left of the old Ottoman Empire is the present-day country Turkey.
  • Many ethnic groups wanted their own country (which is called nationalism) and as a result, they wanted to break away from the Ottoman Empire. These groups knew that fighting the Empire while they were busy fighting in World War l would be the perfect time to rebel. So, this put even more strain on the Ottoman Empire. After much fighting, the war ended.
  • The big, huge, large, grand, ginormous, humongous, Ottoman Empire had to break up ☹ No more power for them…
