James (Boobie) Miles, the star running back for Permian High began to attract a lot of attention his junior year in front of a crowd with nearly 20,000 people, ranking up 232 yards and 3 touchdowns in a very emotional game.
Boobie's strong emotions came from his childhood, people doubting him, and racist terms called at him. During the game against Arlington, he took his anger out at the defenders who were blocking him.
Boobie dreams big, hoping to win state in '88 and make it to the pros (any team besides the Jets).
The '88 season began with a simple scrimmage game in the preseason. Coaches are hoping to get a glimpse of the new and improved players of Permian High School's varsity team.
Although, on a simple 15 yard play, Boobie's foot gets caught in the turf as an opposing player falls on his legs. This causes Boobie to go down in pain, and he is taken out of the game.
Trapper, the team doctor, heads to the bench to check Boobie's leg. In his unofficial examination, Trapper suggests that Boobie has a knee injury that could keep him out for 6-8 weeks. Boobie becomes furious and begins to lose hope.
