  • 40 male participants aged between 20-50 were obtained by a newspaper advertisement or direct mail solicitation which asked for volunteers to participate in a study of memory and learning. They were paid $4.50 for attending 
  • 14 Yale seniors asked to predict outcome. Predicted only 1.2% would go to 450V.
  • Teacher sat infront of an electric shock generator - gave learner a shock for each incorrect answer.
  • Learner tape recorded predetermined set of responses, he gave 3 incorrect answers for every correct one.
  • Prod 1: Please continue.
  • Prod 3: It is absolutely essential that you continue.
  • Prod 4 : You have no other choice but to continue.
  • Prod 2: The experiment requires you to continue.
  • Participants debriefed.
