Salva and Nya face many challenges throughout their stories, but they are able to survive these experiences because of their perseverance and determination. Nya is able to endure the harsh conditions of her walk to a pond with little water or food, while Salva is able to walk for hundreds of miles with the same conditions in a desert.
Linda Sue Park's book tells us about two characters who had the strength and perseverance to achieve their goals, and also determination and encouragement from their family. Salva is currently the founder of an organization that drills wells for people living in harsh conditions in Sudan, like Nya's village. Salva's stoicism and patience helped reach his goal of 350 wells in South Sudan.
