Storyboard Text

  • During the 19th century, Americans and Europeans pushed themselves on the people of China more and more. They spread Christianity throughout the country using missionaries. The Chinese saw this as a loss of Chinese culture and it angered them.
  • Do you want to learn about the boxer rebellion?
  • Yes!
  • The Boxer Rebellion took place from 1899 to 1901 and was an uprising in China.  They were normal civilians who violently reacted in regard to the influence of foreign Christian missionaries and diplomats in China. In China, the Boxers are known in as the "Society of Righteous and Harmonious Fists."
  • Why?
  • Get out of our country!
  • The Chinese government had badly lost two wars against Britain. The people of China afterwards decided to organize a resistance. They formed a movement based on martial arts.
  • China will defeat Britain!
  • We'd like to see you try!
  • In the beginning, the Boxers also had the Chinese government as a target. The government was run by the Qing dynasty, which were actually notpart of the same ethnic group as most of China. Because of this, the Boxers thought of them as foreigners who needed to be pushed out. Qing officials were hesitant about how to react to the Boxers.  The Qing dynasty soon enough decided that the bigger threat were the foreigners. The Chinese government sent soldiers to support the Boxers after  the Qing and the Boxers came to an understanding,
  • Boxers < foreigners
  • We will push you out, you foreigner!
  • The Boxers killed over 230 foreign children, women, and men in China. The Boxers also killed thousands of Chinese who had converted to Christianity.
  • what?!?
  • You took away our Chinese culture!
  • That's awful
  • The End
  • Don't worry
  • Japan, Britain, Germany, Russia, France, Austria, the United States and Italy sent group of 20,000 soldiers  against the Boxers and the Qing. They attacked Beijing and defeated the Qing army and the Boxers.
