  • He betrayed his own country!
  • After Louis Riel's death, there were various opinions on whether he was a hero or a villain.
  • He stood up for the Metis when no one else would!
  • To form your own opinion, you must understand both perspectives.
  • We will start with reviewing Louis Riel's relationship with the Metis.
  • Louis Riel was born and grew up in the Red River Valley. When he was an adult, the Dominion of Canada acquired the land.
  • Ahhh, yes. This is great land that the Dominion will find very useful.
  • This is not right! What about us?
  • Men! Go survey the land west!
  • The Metis formed a committee to protect their culture, and the landscape of the RR Valley changed. Riel was first elected as the secetary. and later becamer president.
  • Yeah, we were here first! We have to do something about this!
  • To the Metis, Riel was a hero.  When Manitoba entered Confederation, he helped create the Lists of Rights, which ensured that the province and its people were protected.
