Storyboard Text

  • Kino and Juana's Brush House
  • The Town
  • Outside the Doctor's Office
  • Coyotito was stung by the scorpion inside their brush house. Kino and Juana had made breakfast and were eating when they noticed the scorpion approaching Coyotito. They were both startled and when Kino snuck over to get rid of it, the scorpion fell onto Coyotito and stung him in his shoulder. This incident is what caused the main conflict in the story
  • By the Sea Water
  • When in need for someone to heal Coyotito, Kino and Juana decide to take a trip into the town to seek treatment from the doctor. As they walk through the town, they see homes made from plaster and stone, and the city full with beautiful gardens fountains. They also witness many beggars in front of the large church, whom had already assessed the family as “poverty people” form the clothes they wore.
  • The Pearl Buyer's Shop
  • Promptly after Coyotito was stung, Kino and Juana hurried to the Doctor’s office even though they knew their service was likely to be denied. While they waited outside the gate, the Doctor’s servant came outside to see why they were there. He then went inside and told the doctor, who made a racist remark and said that he would not treat them. Kino tried to pay in old, gray pearls but he was denied and sent away. This angered Kino and showed the separation between the doctor, the servant, and Kino.
  • Outside the Brush House
  • Down in the ocean is where Kino goes to dive for pearls. He makes a living and supports his family by the pearls he finds and sells. After Coyotito was stung, and the doctor wouldn’t help because they were poor, Kino goes down to the water to dive for a pearl to help them. This is where he finds the “pearl of the world” and gets his fortune. As we know, they pearl brings much more than happiness and causes more conflict later on.
  • After supposedly  finding the “pearl of the world,” Kino, Juana, and all the villagers take a trip into town, to a pearl dealers shop, where Kino plans to sell his valuable pearl. Upon arrival, Kino shows the pearl, only to receive an expressionless face from the dealer. Kino is told his pearl is worth no more than 1,000 pesos. After 3 other pre-arranged appraisals, Kino feels that he is being cheated and leaves the shop in anger.
  • At night, Kino began to sense evil from outside his brush house. He sensed something calling him outside, challenging him, so he grabbed his knife and hesitantly walks out from the house. Juana hears a grunting struggle and becomes terrified, running towards Kino. Outside, Kino lies with blood oozing from his head, beaten, and surrounded completely by evil. Juana helps Kino up and realizes what they have gotten themselves into.
