Storyboard Text

  • Learning the Formula
  • -b ±      b2 -4ac           2a
  • Starting the Problem
  • a=      b=       c=
  • x2+3x-4=0
  • Mistake
  • So, my A is 1, my B is 3, and my C is negative 4?
  • You're correct! I thought you would have a little more trouble.
  • This is the Quadratic Formula, and it is much easier to use than it looks.
  • Mistake
  • Is it the plus or minus sign?
  • Monica you forgot something very important.
  • In order to use the formula you need to plug in your a, b, and c.
  • Multiplying
  • Monica figures out what her A, B, and C are so she can start plugging them in.
  • Inside the Radical
  • While plugging in the numbers Monica forgot her plus or minus sign. The sign is very important and needed. In the next step, she fixes her problem.
  • x2+3x-4=0
  • -3     32 -4(1)(-4) 2(1)
  • a=1  b=3  c=4
  • Now you square your B and multiply your parentheses.
  • -3 ±   9 +16            2
  • Inside the radical, you combine 9 and 16 to get the answer of 25.
  • -3 ±          25            2
