Storyboard Text

  • Have you heard about what’s been happening in the parliament lately in England?
  • What even is the parliament, mother?
  • The parliament is the highest legislative branch that’s made up of the house of lords and the house of commons that consists of the gentry… we learned this in elementary school!
  • Oh, then yes I have! I’ve heard all about the high monarchs shutting down the Parliament whenever they don’t agree with them.
  • Well King James I constantly shut down his Parliament in 1604 because they disagreed with his spending habits & the fact that he tried raising his own taxes. King Charles I first shut down his Parliament in 1626 when they refused to give him money for war & shut it down again when they said he wasn’t allowed to raise his own taxes without their consent.. They’re insane!
  • Who are the high monarchs that you speak of?
  • Yes, the Parliament leaders created the army of opposition after he tried dissolving the Parliament as a whole by invading the Parliament with his army.
  • Didn’t King Charles I start a war with the Parliament over this?
  • No… how did it?
  • Did you know that this started the English Civil War?
  • The Cavaliers, which was the army that supported King Charles I and the nobles battled against the Roundheads, which consisted of an army that supported Oliver Cromwell.
  • Who are Oliver Cromwell and King Charles I?
