  • The Battle of Fort Sumter April 12, 1861 This battle is recognized as the first of the civil war. The underestimated confederates dealt a heavy blow to the Union, and this led to the Union becoming more serious about the incoming war.
  • Battle of Bull Run July 21, 1861 This battle took place in Virginia. It was the first major battle in the Civil War., with approximately 4,750 people killed. 
  • The Battle of Pittsburg Landing April 6-7, 1862 This battle took place along the Tennessee River over the course of 2 days. This was the costliest battle in US history at the time with more than 20,000 people killed
  • The 7 Days Battles June 25-July 1 1862 Virginia provided host to the 7 days battles. This was a set of 7 battles over 7 days. There were close to 16,000 casualties.
  • The Battle of Getteysburg Jul 1, 1863 – Jul 3, 1863 This battle was the costliest in the whole war with 46,286 casualties. It was follewd by the Getteysburg Address by Abe Lincoln.
  • Battle of Palmito Ranch May 12, 1865 – May 13, 1865 This battle took place on the Rio Grande River. It ended with the Confederates surrender to the Union.
