Storyboard Text

  • This is very good, Richard. Now show me that it’s real.
  • Look what I found!
  • We discovered the CF gene in human chromosome 7!
  • CFTR is part of the cell membrane in some epithelial tissues like skin, lungs and the nasal cavity.
  • It codes for making a protein called CFTR that generates mucus.
  •
  • In CF, the CFTR is missing one amino acid which causes the mucus to become too thick.
  • Dr. Tsui had had false hopes in the past and did not want to become too excited about the discovery.
  • After five months of testing, Dr. Tsui and his team discovered the Cystic Fibrosis gene and that it codes for making a protein called CFTR.
  •
  • A little mucus is healthy to keep tissues moist however, in this case the excess mucus causes difficulty while breathing and performing gas exchange in lungs.
  • Present day
  • In 2002, Dr. Tsui returned to Hong Kong and served as president and vice-chancellor of the University until 2014.
  • Among other honours and awards, in 2006 the fifth floor of the University of Toronto's Donnelly CCBR building was named after him to honour his research.
  • In honour of Dr. Lap-Chee Tsui
  • Due to his research, doctors are able to predict whether or not people are carriers of the mutated gene and whether or not there is a risk that they will pass it down to their children.
