  • Before the printing press was invented all books were written by hand, usually by monks.
  • Because they had to be written by hand they were expensive and only royalty or nobility could afford them, so people below that level were usually illiterate.
  • all that changed when Johannes Gutenberg Invented the printing press
  • Books became easier to make and large amounts could be produced at once, so books were accessible for normal people to buy and own
  • Because books were more accessible, people became literate
  • Through reading people learned and grew to be more curious of the world around them, which sparked an industrial revolution leading into the Renaissance and the new world
