It was a long trip, from plane to plane.
When we landed in Somalia on the plane, we rode the rest of the way by bus. It wasn't too bad.
We went to many different places and cities, but the one place I held most dear was Qorilay.
My father's hometown in the countryside.
There, I got to sit and talk with my grandparents, distant relatives, and neighbors every day.
My grandfather Mahmoud enjoyed it most.
He and I used to sit down and talk while drinking milk tea everyday.
Even though I struggled speaking Somali, we still enjoyed our time together and learned from each other.
Soon after we left Qorilay, we left Somalia.
My friends and family back in Somalia supported me and I eventually improved.
Learning another language is valuable, but learning another's heart is priceless.
Even though I couldn’t speak Somali, they understood and knew what I meant in my heart. I learned something.
