  • In the country Jack is known as Jack. The country is where all of Jack's responsibilities are.
  • In the city, Jack is known as Earnest. He uses this false identity to impress Gwendolen and escape his responsibilities.
  • Gwendolen and Cecily think they are in love with the same person but really they were two different people. It was Algernon and Jack using their false identities.
  • Gwendolan finds out that Jack has been lying about his name all along.
  • In the end of the play they find out that Jack's real name is actually Earnest.
