The titanic left Southampton for its maiden voyage on April 10th 1912 and set sail to New York carrying 2,240 passengers
This ship was the first transatlantic crossing many of the passengers were very wealthy, including J Bruce Ismay, the managing director of White Star Line.
Four days after leaving Southampton there had been sporadic reports on the radio of ice from other ships, but the Titanic was sailing on calm seas under a clear sky.
I am the lookout on the ship and I saw the iceberg and rang the warning bell straight away. The engines were reversed and the iceberg grazed along the side of the ship.
The Titanic started sinking very quickly. The evacuation process began with the lowering of the first life boat. This carried 28 people when it could have carried 64. Woman and children boarded the boats first. A total of 1,503 people died.
