When the narrator chains Fortunato to the stables he doesn't resist it because he is drunk.
When the narrator starts pilling the bricks to trap Fortunato. Eventually he "comes to" the narrator can tell this by the rattling of chains and a low monning cry.
When Fortunato wakes up he realizes this is not a joke. Eventually decides to give u, then the narrator leaves the Catacomb only hearing jingle of the bells. No mortal has messed with Fortunato's tomb for 50 years.
