When Sulla left office, different Roman leaders fought against each other for power.
In 60 B.C. Crassus, Pompey, and Julius Caesar ruled the Roman Republic. They were all wealthy. Crassus was a general and Pompey and Caesar were known for their military accomplishments.
These 3 men created the first triumvirate. Each Trimvirate member had a outlying military post. Caesar's was in Gaul. He was winning battles and was growing popular which scared people. He took over Italy and crushed Pompey's army.
