The new 8th grade girl, Sophie, is bullied by some popular girl. In the cafeteria she tries standing up for herself and doesn't help much. Tree, a 7th grader, sees that and invites Sophie to sit with him and his friend. Tree is also 6 feet tall which is very tall for his age.
Tree is forced to go to a dance class and Sophie goes with him. They are partners and since Tree is very tall they have to stand in a very awkward position. Tree didn't mind being Sophie's partner at all. Even though they had a bit of fun the girl that was making fun of Sophie starts talking bad about them which brings the mood down.
There was a hurricane and everyone had to rush the school because that is where they have to go in case anything happens. Tree starts looking for Sophie to make sure she is okay but, can't find her anywhere. He starts worrying about her and what could have happened to her. Then, finds out there are animals that need space to sleep so Tree asks a teacher he knows to help him find a safe place to put them in. He agrees to only put a few in a room and ends up putting a lot in.
After all the chaos and it was safe outside they all went home. Tree and his dad had seen all the destruction in their house and had to start fixing everything. Later on, Sophie comes over and apoligizes for not answering her phone. Sophie also offers to help clean up the house with them. Tree was relieved that she was okay.
Tree's brothers come to visit from college for Christmas and to help clean the house up. They make fun of Tree for his size because Tree is taller than them. Tree's mom wants them all to come to her house to see her but, Tree doesn't like it over there.
They went anyways to go have dinner at her house. It was awkward because his parents were divorced. Tree didn't call her house his home because it didn't feel like home. Later, they found out that she had a date. Tree didn't know how to feel about this because he had mixed emotions about the divorce itself.
