Everyday as Montag walks to work, Clarisse walks with him and tells him about all the odd things she notices about people. She shows him things he never noticed before and tells him how everyone thinks she's odd and antisocial which is why she doesn't go to school. One day, Clarisse doesn't show up on their daily walks. Montag tries not to think too much of it and just hopes that she is okay.
While at work, Montag begins to think like Clarisse and notices things he had never noticed before. He is greatly surprised when he notices that all the firemen have dark hair and dark brows with sharp blue eyes. He begins to wonder why they all look alike.
The fire department gets an alarm and they had to an old woman's home. They find her surrounded by books and they begin to poor kerosene all over books and home. Beatty tries to escort out of the house but she doesn't budge. Beatty tells her that if she won't leave then they will burn her with the books.
They begin to leave but Montag protests and tries to get her to leave. She takes out a match, lights it, and drops it on the kerosene surrounding. Montag watched and she burns herself alive, wondering why she would kill herself for some books.
